Great column last week on the climate change / political circus! I get so sick of hearing about all the rubbish on the weather channel I nearly go nuts! Everytime it’s 80° in Atlanta they call it “epic!”

    Dan,
You are right, guns don’t cause crime. But let me ask you this. Have you ever heard of a bank robber going into a bank and then pulling out a banana and demanding money? Guns enable crimes to be committed.

You are right, also David. Guns are one of the many tools that criminals use to carry out their business. You also might find it interesting, however, that over the last couple of decades, gun ownership has increased significantly, while at the same time, violent crime has been decreasing. As a matter of fact, if you take out all of the cities with heavy gun controls, which, incidentally, are high crime areas, the violent crime rate for America falls to the low range for all developed countries. Guns can enable crime, but they also can enable self-defense and deterrence. More importantly, however, in regards to the second amendment and the intentions of the founders, lots of guns in the hands of citizens is a deterrent for tyrannical abuse by one’s own government, something that needs to be take more seriously as time goes on.

    Dan,
So if I am upset about the NSA invading my privacy, is it going to solve the problem by whipping out an AR-15 and shooting my computer? As to the founders, you well know that the second amendment was created because of their fear of a professional military which would tempt future Presidents to use it frequently for political gain and dangerous adventures abroad. Think Iraq! They envisioned local militias, like the Minutemen to be in place in case the Canadians invaded. How did that work out? Did you see the local boys drilling at the town park today? No, me neither!
